How the pet grooming price calculator works

Groom time is everything from check-in to hand-off: bath, dry, brush out, cut and cleanup. That's all paid time, so it's all counted.

Pay is the groomer's hourly pay, or what you want to pay yourself if you groom alone.

Supplies and overhead are added per groom. Overhead is your monthly rent, insurance, software and other fixed costs divided by your grooms per month.

Finally, the price is set so your profit margin is what you asked for, rounded up to the nearest $5.

The formula: Price = Real cost ÷ (1 - margin). Real cost = groom time × pay + supplies + overhead.

Tips from the trade

  • Time your grooms for a week. Most groomers underestimate doodles, double coats and first visits.
  • Price coat and behavior, not just size. A matted, wiggly medium dog can take as long as a calm large one.
  • Raise prices a little every year. Supplies, rent and your time all cost more each year.

Pet grooming price calculator questions

How much should I charge for dog grooming?

Many groomers charge roughly $50 to $90 for a small or medium full groom and more for large, doodle or matted coats, but the right price depends on your time and costs. This calculator works from your own numbers.

Should I charge by the hour or by the groom?

Most groomers charge by the groom, set by size and coat. Use your hourly cost to set those prices, which is exactly what this calculator does.

What profit margin should a grooming business aim for?

Many owners aim for 20% to 30% after paying themselves. If your margin is thin, one slow week or a broken dryer can wipe out the month.

Does this include my own pay?

Yes. Your time is counted at the hourly pay you enter, so the profit is what's left after you're paid.
