How the shampoo dilution calculator works
A ratio of 1:16 means 1 part concentrate to 16 parts water, so 17 parts in all.
The bottle size is split into those parts. One part is concentrate, the rest is water.
Water goes in first so the shampoo doesn't foam up while you fill.
Tips from the trade
- Follow the label. The ratio on the bottle is the place to start, and stronger isn't cleaner.
- Mix only what you'll use in a few days. Diluted shampoo doesn't keep as long as concentrate.
- Label every mixed bottle with the product and ratio so anyone can refill it the same way.

Shampoo dilution calculator questions
What does 1:16 mean on dog shampoo?
1 part concentrate to 16 parts water. In a 32 ounce bottle that's about 1.9 ounces of concentrate and 30.1 ounces of water.
Is a stronger mix better?
Usually not. Too strong is harder to rinse, wastes product and can irritate skin. Use the label ratio.
How much does diluted shampoo cost per dog?
Often well under a dollar for the shampoo itself, but conditioner, sprays, towels and laundry add up. The full Grooming Shampoo & Supply Cost Calculator figures the real total by size.
